Representing the character and complexity of the common man through layers of watercolor

Montague loves to capture people in watercolor, being intriqued by human emotion and the human experience. She intuitively chooses the people she paints to represent the common man;  those who are not often noticed but still have their story to tell.  Through the transparency of watercolor,  the character and complexity of a person is built, layer by layer, capturing the moment and revealing the emotion behind the mask.  Working from black and white photographs taken during events or while traveling she has the opportunity to create her own palette while emphasizing the values in light and shadow. After many years in the Interior Design Industry, she is now pursuing her love of watercolor painting and drawing. Since she started painting she has been in numerous juried exhibits and has received many awards. Susan is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, the Colorado Watercolor Society and the Texas Watercolor Society. She was a docent at the Denver Art Museum and currently works as the Interior Design Manager for a custom home builder in Denver, CO.   Susan is a native of Colorado. She received her BFA at Colorado State University. Montague is represented by gallery Elements 5280 in Greenwood Village, Colorado.  She won top prize at the NY based American Watercolor Society Exhibition taking the Bronze Medal of Honor.   Her works and awards can be seen at Susan Montague .
